So always remember the biggest differentiator among software companies is not actually the code.
I’ve never had a customer ever ask me what programming language we use or how clean our code is, or what our development process is.
No, the actual biggest differentiator, the biggest key to success for software products is actually your support.
Why Support Matters More Than Perfect Code
And this blows everyone away. But you cannot build a product. You cannot bootstrap a product that’s going to be perfect. Perhaps you can get it to some stage of perfection, although even that is probably unattainable.
But what you can do every single time a customer has an error or opens a ticket, you can offer fantastic support, respond quickly.
What We Do at Stammer
One thing we do for Stammer, every single day, we have a daily support call where it’s actually the two co-founders, myself and Ross. We are literally on that call and it’s getting to the point where we’re getting big enough now to where customers are actually surprised that we are on that call.
But it’s one of the most valuable things and there’s days where people don’t even join because not everyone has time to join a support call, but they know that we are there and that it is there if they ever need help.
The Bottom Line
So yes, focus on your support if you want to build an amazing software product.
