@timothy_bramlett This Guy Used ChatGPT to Quit Drugs

Okay, so this is an interesting AI use case that I actually haven’t seen before, but I’ve seen others that are very related to this.
This guy used ChatGPT to help him quit his weed addiction. And what he basically did is he kept a chat going with ChatGPT, and while he was attempting to quit, anytime he had an issue, he would go in there and chat with ChatGPT.
How It Actually Helped Him
He says it helped him in several key ways:
It explained things to him, like withdrawal symptoms, so he didn’t panic. It normalized the process by showing him what’s typical around each stage.
It allowed him to reframe cravings as old programming rather than his identity.
And most importantly, it helped him explore the roots of his addiction.
The Connection to AI Therapy
Now this is interesting because this is kind of related to people that are using ChatGPT as a kind of therapist.
Now obviously this was very helpful for this guy. But it does bring up interesting concerns, and I don’t really have an opinion on this, but are people using AI in ways that it should not be used?
The Real Question Here
Is this better done by a therapist? Now, of course, could this guy have accessed a therapist? Would it have been better if he could have accessed a human therapist? Of course, probably.
But that of course would require him spending money to pay for a therapist. And here he was able to use ChatGPT in order to get the same job done for free, or at least maybe $20 a month if he has the plus plan.
So What Do You Think?
But I’m very curious about this. What are your thoughts on this?
Do you think people should be using ChatGPT as a therapist, or do you think it is ultimately dangerous?
