tmux is a terminal multiplexer I actually use it mainly to keep ssh sessions active when I am not actually logged in to that Linux server. It gives you a simple way to reconnect to a tmux session and start right back where you were working.
tmux also allows your to split your screen into multiple panes and windows which gives you a fantastic way to multi-task like a console beast. I also know a guy at the Python users group I go to, who uses tmux to setup small console dashboards that he uses to monitor various metrics.
